As reported by The Guardian, bigwig publisher Nintendo announced on Friday, June 6 that it will be shutting down its European headquarters in Großostheim, Germany and relocating it to Frankfurt (also in Germany). The consequence of this relocation has resulted in the loss of jobs for 130 employees.
According to The Guardian, Nintendo’s full statement on the matter details that Nintendo of Europe has entered a consultation process on a number of changes regarding how the company intends to improve its business in the long term, and how such changes will better enable Nintendo of Europe to adapt to a “rapidly changing business environment.”
“The measures include the consolidation of the current European headquarters in Großostheim (Germany) to Frankfurt (Germany), the closure of the warehouse and office in Großostheim, as well as outsourcing and reorganising some functions,” explained Nintendo in its announcement.
“These intended measures have not been made lightly and have only been arrived at after thorough analysis and careful consideration,” the company added. “The intended measures will sadly have a direct effect on some of the employees based in the Großostheim and Frankfurt offices in Germany and would lead to the release of approximately 130 permanent employees.”
Nintendo of Europe will also be working with the local Works Council in Germany to help provide “clarity and support for all affected employees as soon as possible.” My thoughts go out to those who have lost their jobs because of this relocation effort.
It’s been reported that Nintendo recently filed a trademark in Japan that possibly hints towards a remake of Pokémon Emerald. The trademark, entitled “Delta Emerald“, was filed back on Friday, May 2, and was publicly published on Thursday, May 29. Though an official announcement has yet to be made about a Pokémon Emerald remake, this trademark is so far the strongest evidence we have of the possibility of there being one.
