Who remembers Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee? I do. I remember it as one of the first PlayStation games I ever got my hands on. I was recently told that Oddworld: Abes Oddysee was being remade for the next gen consoles. This was something I had to see for myself. Why? Well, you see, Oddworld games come with their own sense of humor. If you’re someone who is young at heart, and admittedly slightly immature (such as myself) then the thought of seeing this humor brought to life in all its HD glory would be a spectacle to behold. I had to see for learn more about this remake, but in the process, I wanted to become more familiar with the original game. Unfortunately, I didn’t make it very far. I got stuck farting in this miner’s face for far longer than I should have. (Then spending an even more ridiculous amount of time creating this GIF.)
The remastered Oddworld promises to deliver a true next-gen experience. Everything from the mechanics to the graphics has reportedly been reworked. The developers also promise all new music and sound effects. (Honestly, do they need to tell us that?) While this is to be expected, I do find it disappointing that Oddworld’s sound effects are going to change. The sarcastic, albeit clumsy “Oops,” Abe gives when “accidently” slaughtering one of his own kind always manages to get a chuckle.
For many gamers who aren’t old enough, this will be their first experience with an Oddworld game. It’s just fortunate that potty humor is still popular among kids. The team at Oddworld Inhabitants truly have their work cut out for them considering the fact that Oddworld has seemingly lost popularity over the last decade. Not only must they find a way to bring their old audience back in, but they must also please newer crowds. Of course this means optimizing the most recent hardware available. From the looks of things, the developers have made great strides in making this a reality. The once 2D rendered Oddworld finds itself as a complete 3D rework. As a matter of fact, it looks like an entirely new game altogether.
It’s difficult to imagine that the picture above represents the same goofy game from our youth, but the developers have done an astounding job of bringing Abe’s goofy antics into the 21st century. Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty will be featured on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PS Vita, Wii U, PC, Mac and Linux and is currently scheduled for a Spring, 2014 release.
