Yesterday, Vincent Pontbriand, senior producer on Assassin’s Creed Unity, announced that Ubisoft’s upcoming open-world stealth title will be running at 900p and 30 frames per second on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, with their reason behind the decision was “to lock them at the same specs to avoid all the debates and stuff.”

However, Blake Lisby, a user on Change.org, created a petition called ‘Make Assassin’s Creed Unity 1080p and 60 fps on PS4’ in response to the news, which has already amassed more than 600 signatures (the target is set at 1000).

“Just because the Xbox One cannot handle 1080p that is reason for the people who have a PS4 to be held back as well,” Lisby wrote in the petition’s description.

“And the same for fps, assuming the PS4 can handle 60 fps as well. I know Ubisoft originally planned for a day-one patch allowing the PS4 version of the game to be 1080p and there is no reason they should go back on it now just to ‘avoid all the debates and stuff.’

“There is no reason to hold one console back just in order to avoid debates because based off if that logic you would have to keep the PC locked at 900p and 30 fps even though it can far surpass those specs. Put each console at what it can handle!”

Ubisoft swiftly responded to the backlash received from the gaming community following Pontbriand’s comments, claiming that “We understand how Vincent’s quotes have been misinterpreted.”

“To set the record straight, we did not lower the specs for Assassin’s Creed Unity to account for any one system over the other,” reads the statement issued by Ubisoft to IGN.

“Assassin’s Creed Unity has been engineered from the ground up for next-generation consoles. Over the past 4 years, we have created Assassin’s Creed Unity to attain the tremendous level of quality we have now achieved on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. It’s a process of building up toward our goals, not scaling down, and we’re proud to say that we have reached those goals on all SKUs.

“At no point did we decide to reduce the ambitions of either SKU. Both benefited from the full dedication of all of our available optimization resources to help them reach the level of quality we have today with the core Assassin’s Creed Unity experience.

“Final specs for Assassin’s Creed Unity aren’t cemented yet, but we can say we showed Assassin’s Creed Unity at 900p during our hands-on preview event last week. We’re confident that gamers will be thrilled with the gorgeous graphics and how Paris is brought to life in Assassin’s Creed Unity.”

Running on the AnvilNext engine, Assassin’s Creed Unity is scheduled for release in November on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
