There have been some cool Occulus Rift features lately, you can simulate riding a roller coaster, dodging lasers and a lot more. But Pixel Rift to me takes the cake. Pixel Rift is a “virtual reality arcade game simulator”. In English, it’s a virtual reality game about playing a game. Talk about meta.
You can check out the main site here, but here’s a quick snippet of what the game is about:
Follow the life of computer gaming addict Nicola as she battles through the ages to play her favourite game Pixel Rift.
A game within a game, Pixel Rift is original, fun and full of surprises that will keep you guessing along the way. You will venture from living rooms to classrooms, playing consoles, handhelds and even arcade machine as you fight the mundane distractions of life so that you can get down to what’s most important – gaming! From the black and white 2D sprites of the 70s to the bright and colourful 3D graphics of the 90s, Pixel Rift truly is a nostalgic and mad trip down memory lane.
Games inside games isn’t the weirdest thing around. Call of Duty: Black Ops had the entirety of Zork hidden in the main menu, along with another arcade game. The GTA series is also known for having tons of fantastic games hidden around the larger game itself. But Pixel Rift is taking it to a whole new level.
Ana Ribeiro is the creator of Pixel Rift, and she states:
Pixel rift is a reflection of my life experience playing games since I can remember. This game is my final Project is for my masters degree in Games Design and Development at The National Film & Television School.
Quite the bold project! It’s weird, we can simulate games within games via the Oculus Rift. Being a Philosophy graduate, I’m forced to consider, what if the Oculus Rift can perfectly recreate the experience of taking off the Oculus Rift? Do we really want to go down this rabbit hole?
