Over the last couple of weeks, multiple developers have been laid off of several different Playstation studios. Studios such as Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Guerrilla Cambridge, Sony Santi Monica, Evolution Studios, and SCE London Studio have all seen multiple departures. Many of these layoffs come from some of their most successful franchises like the inFamous series, Uncharted series, Drive Club, God of War series, and Killzone series. While some people try to understand what’s happening over at Sony, others wonder what the future holds for one of this company’s most successful products.
SCE has been praised mostly for their console’s numerous exclusive titles. The company had secured many, many exclusives for the last two generations of the console. Many of those exclusives have become classic hits on those platforms including Killzone, God of War, and inFamous. With all the success these games have brought this company over the years, it’s upsetting to see those developers go. With all these layoffs, one question becomes frequently asked, what does the future of the system look like? With the very successful launch of the PS4, it’s safe to say the Playstation’s future looks very promising. The PS4 has not only become the more popular choice of the next generation consoles, it’s also in a great position. The console sits at a great price with a variety of games. The PS4’s camera has also been selling quite well. There’s no doubting the console has some of its strongest, most ambitious years ahead of it.
While it’s a shame those studios had to lose such talented developers, the industry still has many opportunities for them to pursue their passion. And if anyone has been worried about the future of Sony’s machine, they shouldn’t be. The Playstation looks to have even more success in the coming years with games like Uncharted 4, and the continued support of many of gaming’s greatest studios. The future truly remains bright for Sony and the Playstation down the line and that spells great things for gamers, and studios a-like.
