Playstation reclaiming the gaming throne with the PS4?

by GH Staff

The PS4 has sold a staggering  7 million console’s in just over 5 months on the market. It has already been declared the fasting selling console ever. Sony has held nothing back when it comes to the PS4. In just over 5 months, they have announced over 100+ games coming to the platform in 2014. In addition to games, Sony has been keeping a keen eye on what their fans desire for their console. The company has been requesting features from their consumers for future updates. With the amount of success the PS4 has already generated, It looks like the Playstation brand may reclaim that elusive gaming throne.

The Playstation 3 fought hard for the top spot during the last console generation, but neither the Xbox 360 or the PS3 could keep pace with the Nintendo Wii. In many ways the console bested its direct competitor the Xbox 360. The PS3 offered a wider selection of exclusive titles and PS+ remained the better overall service compared to Xbox Live. The PS3 only fell short on a couple of key features. The lack of a reliable network hurt the Playstation 3 for the most part. In comparison to Xbox Live, PSN wasn’t as plentiful on online features or connectivity. Significant features like party chat, better online servers, and arguably better online exlusives (Halo, Gears of War and Left 4 Dead) made Xbox the preferred console for online gaming. The PS3 also had a lack of UI updates or improvements. From the day it launched til now, the console has had relatively the same interface.

The Playstation 4 on the other hand has done everything the Xbox One hasn’t. The PS4 improved on key areas they neglected on the Playstation 3. The PS4 improved online connectivity with better servers, they added party chat, they simplified and enhanced their user interface, and they transitioned a superior service onto the console in PS+. They have also continued their exclusive choke hold on their competitor having announced games left and right since launch. Franchises like The Last of Us, God of War, Uncharted, and Infamous also help the Playstation image. Sony also made the PS4 a lot more development friendly. The PS3, according to multiple developers, had been a bit complicated to develop for. While developers eventually became familiar with its architecture, it wasn’t til the end of the cycle that they harnessed its true potential.

As the Xbox One and Wii U begin to find some ground, the PS4 continues to bolster a significant lead. While it’s way to early to declare a victor, the Playstation 4 has already become the favorite. Continuing their current streak would aid in their endeavors. Surely having Playstation as a force to be reckoned with in the console arena would only create further competition and benefits for all of us gamers.
