Sony Interactive Entertainment announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new performance tier of AI upscaling that brings AI-guided image quality improvements to PS5. Daniel Craig, Principal Engineer, Graphics R&D, detailed the technology in a PlayStation Blog post published October 1, 2026.
What QSSR Is and Where It Came From
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) launched on PS5 Pro. According to the PlayStation Blog post, players and developers have asked whether similar image-quality improvements could come to the standard PS5. Until now, PSSR’s computational demands made bringing that experience to PS5 impossible.
PSSR analyzes game images pixel by pixel and uses AI to upscale them with more detail and stability than conventional approaches.
QSSR is born from Project Amethyst, Sony’s AI graphics collaboration with AMD. It is built on two key innovations, a more efficient neural network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation that maximizes performance on PS5.
PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro. QSSR brings the benefits of AI-guided upscaling to PS5, with notable improvements to both image detail and image stability.
First Games and Developer Response
The first titles to use QSSR are Marvel’s Wolverine from Insomniac Games and Ghost of Yōtei from Sucker Punch Productions. Both are being patched today to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5.
Sucker Punch recently announced Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition, which adds a narrative expansion and a combat survival mode to Ghost of Yōtei.
Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology at Insomniac Games, said “QSSR adds more pixel-level clarity and stability to environments, bringing out extra detail amid the busy streets of Madripoor and the dense alleyways of Shinjuku across Logan’s journey. It is a perfect companion to the launch of Marvel’s Wolverine and brings a taste of the PS5 Pro experience to players on PS5.”
Jasmin Patry, Lead Rendering Engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, said “QSSR lets Ghost of Yōtei players experience the world with more clarity and detail, resolving fine details in characters and environments with a level of temporal stability not possible on PS5 until now. It is a positive step toward all PS5 players experiencing the image quality that PSSR brings to PS5 Pro.”
Broader Developer Availability
Sony Interactive Entertainment will offer QSSR broadly to all PlayStation developers. The company expects to see these improvements in many more titles.
