Earlier today Masahiru Sakurai posted his “Pic of the Day” to the Nintendo Miiverse showing off the design of the Super Smash Bros. 3DS song collection screen. In the initial post he explained the color coding for remixed songs stating, “The pink ones are songs arranged for this version of Super Smash Bros., while the white ones are remixes made in earlier Smash Bros. games.” meaning there are tracks in the game that will totally trigger your nostalgia which is always fun.
While including a song collection isn’t a new feature to the Smash Bros. series, he went on to explain what additions have been made to make the track list slightly more rewarding to the player. In the proceeding post he showed a picture of the 3DS’ bottom screen for the sound collection with the “Play in Sleep Mode” button selected. This is a new highlight. He explains,
“If you turn it on, you can listen to the tracks with your headphones even when your Nintendo 3DS is closed. The L and R Buttons will let you skip tracks.”
Because who doesn’t want to go on their daily jog listening to Kongo Jungle or fall asleep to Ballad of the Goddess? Sakurai believes that players will go around carrying their 3DS like an mp3 player the size of a Walkman just to listen to the Smash Bros. tracks. Maybe some people will but, this seems like a strange feature to put into the game especially if it only works with headphones in. I’d be more likely to play the tracks over the 3DS speakers while my friends and I were hanging out chatting than to walk down to the corner store jamming Gerudo Valley. Okay, maybe I’d do that too. Almost as strange as being able to use your 3DS as a Smash themed mp3 player was the fact that players can listen to character voices. Just imagine Link’s notorious “HYAH!” on repeat for ten hours. Sounds like a party.
The news doesn’t end with the inclusion of a potentially useless features though. Sakurai was quite the blabbermouth today also letting the Miiverse know that in Smash Run, the music that plays is selected from the songs you’ve selected on the track list.
“This means you can customize your own song lineup!! Usually each stage has two tracks-which makes for a lot of songs on its own-but as a bonus we’ve added more songs for you to enjoy in Smash Run and in the Sounds area.”
I can actually see using this feature to your advantage. In Smash Run you want to be pumped up to explore the map, defeat enemies and find all the loot! A playlist with your favorite songs will make that much more enjoyable and put you in the right mindset to conquer those courses.
The final posting, yes that was two pictures and four posts for the “Pic of the Day”, was an announcement that some tracks are now available for a listen on the official Super Smash Bros. website. Currently listed are Multi-Man Smash, Pokémon (Trainer Battle) (Pokémon X and Y) and Full Steam Ahead (Spirit Tracks).
