Should You Trade In Your Old Video Games?

GameStop sales, stocks drop in spite of new hardware growth

We are all guilty of this. Going out, and buying the newest game on launch day, playing it to death, only to stop playing the game a week later. All of a sudden, the game sits on your shelf only to collect dust for the next several months. A new game comes out, but you don’t want to spend that $60 on a new game. What if I trade in my old games? Maybe I can get that game for 50% less! Should I trade-in my old video games to get a new one?

Why You Should Trade Them In

GameStop popula594px-Get-Lots-of-Trade-in-Credit-at-Gamestop-Step-2rized the idea that you should trade-in your old video games in order to get the latest and greatest for cheaper. It’s a brilliant idea, it’s not like they are ever going to be played again, might as well get something out of it? Since this idea has gotten popular, other major retailers have gotten into this phenomena as well such as Best Buy, Amazon.com, and even Target just to name a few. Due to the saturation of different retailers now offering this idea, a lot of them do certain promotions in order to get your used games. GameStop usually lets you get a higher percentage of a trade-in if you put it towards a game that just came out, or one that is coming out in a few months. Best Buy allows 100% trade-in bonus value for a lot of their games, you can even check out how much you would get per game if you go to their website. There are also websites out there such as cheapassgamer.com that if you go to the forums they will give you advice such as trading in multiples of the same game, or stacking promotions to maximize how much you can get in return. All things considered it doesn’t seem like a bad idea at all to get rid of your old library of video games to go ahead and get yourself a couple of new games in return for the ones that collect dust.

Trading in your old games may seem like a good idea, unless you start to take a look at the value of a lot of the games that you already own. If you purchase a new game at $60, as soon as you take off that plastic covering, the game depreciates in value by 60% instantly. If you buy that game, and decide to trade it in a month down the line, the most you are looking to get for that game is $25. This is not even mentioning the games that you have owned for years. That Madden 2006 game that is sitting on your shelf, you will get a maximum of one dollar for it, regardless of what promotion is offered. In the fine print of a lot of the promotions you will see that the game has to garner at least two dollars or more for you to be able to use it. It also depends on how popular the game was, as well as if the game has an annual tradition of release. The only time that you will ever see a decent return on a trade-in is if the game is relatively new or if the game is hard to get a hold of, because of this, it’s not always a good idea to trade your old video games in.
