Scrabble is one of the most popular board games in the world and has been for almost 80 years. Over the last few years Scrabble themed games have been popping up all over the place on mobile devices, which has caused the popular Hasbro board game to be pushed to the back of the closet. While this game predominantly was a fun family activity, the recent release of these Scrabble themed mobile games have caused it to become more of a competitive online game rather than creating that bonding atmosphere for family members.
Hundreds of thousands of people play Scrabble or Words with Friends on a daily basis on their smartphone or tablet and although cheating used to involve another person looking over to see what letters you had, it now involves people visiting websites which virtually play the game for them. Recent studies have shown that almost 40% of people that play Scrabble or Words with Friends search for some form of cheat to help them win their matches. Cheating in Scrabble is now even easier due to the fact that your opposition cannot possibly prove that you are cheating aside from the fact that you are making words which earn hundreds of points in one go.
Some of the cheats for these games include a replica Scrabble board that allows you to input your letters and will give you answers of what word to use, how many points you will get and even where to place the letters. While cheating helps you win games, is that really what the game is about? What is the point in cheating in a game which is supposed to be fun and challenging especially when the cheat you are using is just playing the game for you?
People cheat to feel good, winning something, especially competitively gives you a feeling of accomplishment and self worth. It is not surprising that people cheat on Scrabble when these cheats are just a Google search away and your opponent can never truly determine if you are highly intelligent or just using some form of cheat.
