Lucky’s Tale brings something unique to Virtual Reality
Words With Friends co-creator Paul Bettner has confirmed that his game studio Playful Corp, is creating a new 3D platform game for the Oculus Rift. The game, entitled “Lucky’s Tale” is set to debut at E3 next week. Playful Corp has created a partnership with Oculus for an unspecified amount of time. Bettner has expressed his thoughts on Virtual Reality gaming, and says not to look down on the concept.
Bettner stated “Virtual reality–I mean truly accurate, comfortable virtual reality–is the most important thing to happen to interactive entertainment in decades. I know it sounds like exaggeration, but it’s impossible to explain what this is like to someone who hasn’t experienced it for themselves. Your brain is convinced that you are somewhere else, that you are in another world. I have worked my entire career to get to this moment, to create something like this.” Bettner, who is the CEO of Playful Corp, also mentioned a second unnamed game from Playful will be coming to Steam later this year.
Lucky’s Tale, interestingly enough, is not meant to played in first person, which is contrary to how most people view the use for the Oculus Rift. Most titles being developed for the Oculus Rift are in first person because of the Oculus Rift’s ability to track head movement. However, Lucky’s Tale will not try to take advantage of that mechanic, at least not in the sense other developers have. The game will be a full 3D platformming adventure, that will be viewed in third person. How do you think someone would benefit playing a game like this with the use of a Virtual Reality headset? It will be interesting to hear more about it at E3. Lucky’s Tale can be seen on the show floor at E3 in the Oculus booth on the West Wing. For those of us who can’t attend E3, we will simply have to wait and be patient to hear more regarding Lucky’s Tale.
