Gotcha Gotcha Games has opened the Steam page for RPG Maker U2U, marking a significant step for the long-running series as it returns to Valve’s platform after its predecessor skipped it. The page, spotted via Steam News and reported by RPG Site, confirms that the upcoming RPG creation tool will launch as a standalone app, requiring no Unity installation—a notable departure from the previous entry. The news was reported by Rpgsite.
The announcement matters because RPG Maker Unite, the prior release, was initially planned for Steam but never appeared there. As of this writing, Unite is only available on the Unity Asset Store and Epic Games Store, with the RPG Maker Official Store directing activation keys to Epic. U2U’s Steam presence signals a shift in distribution strategy, potentially broadening access for creators who prefer Valve’s ecosystem.
Alongside the page, Gotcha Gotcha Games published an overview trailer on YouTube and revealed key visual and main default characters designed by Namaniku ATK. The tool introduces a new 2.5D creation capability, a P2D Map Editor, and over 100 ready-to-use maps, aiming to streamline development for both newcomers and veterans.
What’s New in RPG Maker U2U: 2.5D Maps and 8-Direction Movement
The headline feature is the ability to create games in 2.5D, enabled by the P2D Map Editor. This system lets anyone build detailed P2D maps quickly using familiar RPG Maker-style controls, with over 100 pre-built maps included for immediate use. The emphasis is on depth and height: stairs, slopes, ladders, overpasses, and underpasses allow for multi-level maps that reward exploration, from high peaks to deep valleys.
P2D maps also unlock true 8-direction movement, a departure from the classic four-direction limitation. Players can move freely in all eight directions, and standard 4-direction character sprites are automatically mapped to diagonal directions, so creators don’t need to prepare special diagonal assets. This reduces asset workload while expanding gameplay possibilities.
Standalone Steam App: No Unity Required
RPG Maker U2U will launch as a simple standalone Steam app, with no Unity installation required. It distributes as a fully standalone product, meaning users do not need to install the Unity engine, Unity Hub, or create a Unity ID. This is a clear contrast to RPG Maker Unite, which was built on Unity and required that ecosystem.
The tool keeps familiar MZ-style workflows, with core systems such as the Event editor, database, and battle settings closely following RPG Maker MZ. This should allow experienced users to feel immediately at home, while new users benefit from the simplified setup—no engine installation, no account creation, just download and start creating.
What This Means for the RPG Maker Community
The Steam page opening is more than a storefront listing; it’s a strategic pivot. RPG Maker Unite’s absence from Steam was a notable gap, especially given the series’ long history on the platform. By bringing U2U to Steam as a standalone app, Gotcha Gotcha Games addresses a key pain point for creators who found Unite’s Unity dependency a barrier.
The 2.5D and 8-direction features also position U2U as a modern evolution of the series, offering new creative options without abandoning the core RPG Maker formula. The automatic diagonal sprite mapping is a thoughtful touch that lowers the barrier for adopting the new movement system.
As of now, no release date has been announced for RPG Maker U2U. The Steam page is live, and the overview trailer is available on YouTube, giving creators a first look at what’s coming. With the standalone approach and 2.5D capabilities, U2U could be the most accessible and versatile RPG Maker yet—if it delivers on its promises.
