Happy May the 4th for all of you Star Wars fanatics out there, and since it would seem like a rather barren day if we didn’t have any Star Wars news to relay; fortune would have it that today marked a new threshold for Star Wars 1313. Don’t get your hopes up, the game is still cancelled. Disney has long since dropped its trademark for Star Wars 1313 in early January of this year. In accordance to that the creative director, Dominic Robilliard, has also chosen to jump ship onto PlayStation’s board of development. Despite of all those complications, we’ve managed to catch some of the official concept art for Star Wars 1313. It’s still a bitter pill to swallow considering the project will never see the light of an official launch. Wherever the installment was going, it certainly seemed to be heading in the right direction.
Filmpaint studio was commissioned in late 2009 to create some artwork and design implication for the third-person action adventure game from LucasArts. They’ve worked on numerous projects that the audience should be familiar with, such as Tron Legacy and The Amazing Spiderman. But this is one for the archives, and a solemn reality it is. Take a second to appreciate some of the fantastic detail in each piece completed by Brazilian artist Bruno Werneck. Even if we’re not going to see the promised final product that was alluded to at E3 2012, it is nice to imagine what might’ve been imposed on the global gaming market.
From the traverse into the red-light district and through the abandoned lower levels in Coruscant (the Ecumenopolis is where the game was originally set), Star Wars 1313 looked like it was going for a more realistic, and far more gritty outlook on its setting. Following one of the alternate descriptions on the images from Filmpaint; the artist compares the LucasArts project to Blade Runner. The game itself, was said to feature bounty hunter Boba Fett as its main protagonist. Which would’ve been an extremely nostalgic revelation between new and old Star Wars enthusiasts. Of course, we’ve met those who might’ve preferred a brand new character over one that has a previously instated presence in the franchise. But no matter which side you were routing for, it’ll never come to fruition. That is the true tragedy upon closing the LucasArts branch in Disney’s ultimatum.
But there’s no need to despair. Disney and Electronic Arts teamed up last year to reassure that the gaming community will be getting their fair share of the Star Wars franchise. Gamespot reported that both studios are beginning to expand their sci-fi genre and attack at least ten years of multiple releases underneath Star Wars canon. We’ve written about this before, so feel free to take a quick glimpse at the clear expectations we’re beginning to house for the next generation of Star Wars games. These various installments will include projects such as a new Star Wars: Battlefront from the Battlefield creator DICE. So even if we’re no longer expecting Star Wars 1313, there’ll be alternative means to get your fix.
Are you still upset that Star Wars 1313 has been cancelled, do the images and descriptions above leave you feeling underwhelmed for another Star Wars production? Tell us your comments below, we’d be interested to hear the audience’s reaction to updated information following the concept art’s release on the public domain.
