Less than a year after release Warface, Crytek’s attempt at a free-to-play modern FPS, is shutting down on Xbox 360. Upon release, the game was met with marginal success and average reviews by critics due to its less-than-stellar quality and its generic nature. Like most free-to-play models, Warface is free to install and play (the Xbox 360 version requires a gold-membership subscription) but includes purchasable in-game currency, Kredits, that can be used to further advance players with items and equipment. Warface for Xbox 360 launched on April 22, 2014.
This information was announced earlier today by Crytek via Facebook post.
Current players will be allowed to play up until February 1, but as of today no new players will be allowed to sign up to play. In-game Kredits will no longer be purchasable on the console, but players will be allowed to use any that they already own. Crytek will however, continue support the game on PC stating “To all our Xbox 360 players, thank you for choosing to spend your time playing Warface – and we hope you’ll become part of the vibrant community enjoying regular new content and Co-op and Versus action – subscription free – on PC.”
Although Crytek has not given an official reason for the shut down, earlier this year it was reported that Crytek was facing some financial issues, and while the company denied claims of bankruptcy there is no doubt that they haven’t had their fair share of problems. Hopefully the company can regain its footing and return to its former glory.
