Nintendo demonstrated the capabilities of the WiiU to be able to support two gamepads concurrently for games back when it was first revealed. It has been 2 years and we are yet to see any games taking advantage of this feature. Shigeru Miyamoto recently spoke to IGN about the feature.
“I think we’re at a point where we don’t feel it’s realistic to expect people to purchase two GamePads yet. We’re still trying to get as many people as possible to buy the system itself, and that’s where our focus is right now” Miyamoto stated.
Unfortunately this means we wont be able to see the truly unique features that playing with two gamepads could bring. Having two gamepads would be a blessing for local multiplayer, especially if you have a small screen which can’t handle being split 4 ways. While additional gamepads are obviously an expense in a time when the system is still relatively unsuccessful, having your friends bring over their gamepads when they come over to play some local WiiU games would definitely be a welcome feature. For now though, we’ll just have to wait.
