How to Get Netherite in Minecraft
Mine and smelt ancient debris, craft a netherite ingot, and use an upgrade template to improve diamond equipment.
To get netherite in Minecraft, mine ancient debris in the Nether with a diamond pickaxe, smelt it into netherite scrap, then combine 4 scraps with 4 gold ingots to make 1 netherite ingot. To upgrade diamond equipment, you also need a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template and a smithing table.
Correction, October 30, 2026: An earlier version omitted the upgrade template, incorrectly said to smelt scrap, and gave an unsupported total for a full set. This guide now separates the ingot recipe from the equipment upgrade.

How to turn Netherite into equipment
- Find a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template in a bastion remnant chest.
- Open a smithing table with your diamond equipment, 1 netherite ingot and the upgrade template.
- Use the template to upgrade the diamond item. The template is consumed.
Mojang’s Java Trails & Tales notes explain the template requirement and say a template can be copied with 7 diamonds, its matching material block and an existing template. Check the in-game recipe for the materials in your edition. An ingot alone is not enough for the updated smithing process.
Plan the trip
Carry a diamond pickaxe before mining ancient debris and keep the ingot and template steps separate: the furnace turns debris into scrap; the crafting grid turns scrap and gold into an ingot; the smithing table upgrades an existing diamond item.
