Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has entered Campaign Early Access on Steam, unlocking the full single-player story for anyone who has digitally pre-ordered or pre-purchased a qualifying edition. Activision confirmed the launch in an official Steam Community announcement published on October 16, 2026. Early access is the fastest way to see the story before the October 23 launch and to stack the campaign completion rewards ahead of time.
The campaign spans sixteen missions. Players control Private Park Hyun Jun, who fights alongside his squad against a full-scale invasion across the Korean Peninsula, while the operator-turned outlaw John Price hunts "the one pulling the strings." For a look at how the story was first shown, see our Campaign trailer coverage.
How to play the campaign now
Campaign Early Access is tied to a digital pre-order or pre-purchase of Modern Warfare 4. Activision lists the benefit as applying to the Standard Digital Edition or the Vault Edition on Steam. The announcement names both editions as digital and does not add any requirement beyond the pre-order or pre-purchase itself. The early access window stays open until the official launch date of October 23, so players can work through all sixteen missions and bank their completion rewards before the full release.
Launch timeline
The rollout is staggered across three dates. Campaign Early Access is live now, DMZ early access begins October 20, and the full Modern Warfare 4 launch arrives October 23. Players who want the story before multiplayer goes live can finish the campaign in the current window, then move into DMZ when its early access opens. Our DMZ deep dive breaks down that mode ahead of its window.
Campaign completion rewards
Campaign progress unlocks sixteen completion rewards, all of which carry into Multiplayer and DMZ when the full game launches. The rewards unlock in a fixed order as the player advances through missions, and the list below follows that order.
- "Cho" Base Operator
- "No More Rules" Calling Card
- Double XP Token
- "Dallas" Base Operator
- "Ready Line" Loading Screen
- "Luca" Base Operator
- "Gone Dark" Emblem
- "Oh-Ji" Base Operator
- Double XP Token
- "Kal" Base Operator
- Double Weapon XP Token
- "Dunn" Base Operator
- Double Weapon XP Token
- "West" Base Operator
- Double XP Token
- "Park" Base Operator
Eight of the sixteen rewards are Base Operator unlocks, playable characters that carry into Multiplayer and DMZ at launch. The rest are a "No More Rules" Calling Card, a "Ready Line" Loading Screen, a "Gone Dark" Emblem, three Double XP Tokens, and two Double Weapon XP Tokens. The XP tokens are the only consumable items in the list; the operators and cosmetics are permanent unlocks.
What the announcement confirms and leaves open
The announcement confirms the access method, the sixteen-mission count, the reward list, and the three launch dates. It does not state a global unlock time for early access, and because it is a Steam community post, it names the Steam editions specifically. Console timing and physical-edition details are not covered in this announcement. The post also does not detail whether the two editions differ in early access eligibility.
