Call of Duty‘s official Multiplayer reveal for Modern Warfare 4, published on October 21, details a launch package built around 12 Core 6v6 maps, three Ground War maps, four Gunfight arenas, and the reconfigurable Kill Block. The announcement, posted on Steam, confirms that Shipment arrives on October 27, shortly after Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23 as a standalone release. The mode list spans over a dozen options with new economy and objective formats that push matches away from plain slaying.

The 12 Core 6v6 maps are Cachette, Coal, Lithium, Lotus, Mumbai, Munition, Nautical, Reactor U92, Rooftops, Sentry, Silkworm, and Transit 213. Ground War adds Imjin Farmland, Wolves Stadium, and Forest. Gunfight starts with Cafe, Library, NYC, and Smuggler.

Cachette converts an abandoned wine warehouse and a derelict mechanic’s garage on the edge of a French rail terminal into a covert armory. Coal is the remains of an old Soviet coal processing plant, with a fallen smokestack, ore chutes, and a slurry-filled river. Lithium is a processing refinery in rural Mexico, now an active combat zone. Munition is an active North Korean command facility with a munitions depot, monitoring rooms, skybridge, crane, water tower, and hangars.

Four maps use Korean settings. Lotus is a fishing village after an amphibious assault, its market, hostel, boathouse, gardens, and residential blocks scarred by the fight. Nautical puts the fight on a ferry pulling away from a conflict zone at dawn, with debris on its decks and fires on the starboard side and bow. Reactor U92 is a reactor complex that has gone nuclear, with arcs across a concave command room and a boiling containment pool as the meltdown epicenter. Silkworm is a dense urban shopping district around a convenience store, gaming den, and central subway entrance.

Mumbai is a fugitive’s hideout inside a dense residential district, with a Victorian market and a rail line cutting through the blocks. Rooftops is the snow-lined rooftops of New York’s Hotel Times West, with a greenhouse, HVAC platforms, boiler room, patio, skylights, pigeon coop, and laundry room. Sentry is a Russian military base under whiteout conditions, with a maintenance garage, generator room, and substation around a central command center. Transit 213 is an overgrown central parking lot in western India, packed with derelict buses, a repair shop, and a gas station, surrounded by construction and high-rises.

Ground War maps include Imjin Farmland, a rural outskirts with fields, waterways, farms, a mill, roads and rail; Wolves Stadium, a dense urban center with multi-story buildings, transit lines, tunnels, rooftops, and hillsides; and Forest, a wooded hillside between the two with streets, off-road paths, train tracks, guard tower, gas station, and barracks. Gunfight arenas are Cafe, a Paris courtyard with a theater, magazine kiosk, and central fountain; Library, a wood-paneled state library with bookshelves and a center walkway over both sides; NYC, a wintry downtown night with a stage, stands, equipment, and vendors; and Smuggler, a rail yard with parked train cars, ladders to roofs, warehouses, and open ends.

Kill Block Changes What a Map Pool Can Do

Kill Block works differently from every other launch map. It is the Westbridge Training Facility, a modular battleground that reconfigures between rounds and supports 3v3 and 10v10 Gunfight at launch. The announcement lists more than 500 combinations, with some sections new and others drawn from iconic Modern Warfare locations including Crash, Highrise, and Shoot House in randomized placements each match. Sightlines and routes reset every round, so memorizing one layout does not carry over. A window that was safe in round one can become a fatal lane in round two, and a Shoot House callout only works if that section lands in the same rotation. Kill Block forces players to read the current layout anew each round.

Economy and Objective Modes Reshape Match Flow

Inflation ties cash to risk. Eliminating enemies drops a portion of their cash, and the more wealth you carry, the bigger the target you become. Players above the High Value Target threshold have their position revealed to friends and foes, so a rich player cannot hide. Overtime in the final minutes raises cash multipliers, which makes the closing stretch reward movement and finishing kills over passive holding.

Hijack makes one carryable Data Spike the whole objective. It can be carried, thrown, and passed, then planted at the enemy Comm Station to score over time. A full upload requires sustained defense to stop a defuse, so teams cannot trade kills and leave the Spike alone. Collateral imports a buy-phase economy into Search & Destroy. Players start with a Pistol and $800, earn cash between rounds, and buy gear from Armor and Perks, Equipment, Pistols, Standard Issue, Tier 1, and Team Buy menus. Dying loses the loadout but keeps earned cash, so each buy phase becomes a choice between spending now and risking the gear or saving for a stronger later round. Collateral keeps the no-respawn format of Search & Destroy and layers cash management on top of pure aim.

Combat Outpost applies the same objective logic to 32v32 Ground War. Capturing Outposts gives points and expanded spawn locations, while reinforcing captured positions produces team rewards from Local UAV coverage and a JLTV airdrop up to a Light Tank delivered to Headquarters. That turns Ground War from a large-scale slayer mode into a territory and reinforcement loop. The new modes ask players to hold, carry, buy, or capture something under pressure, while TDM and Free-For-All still exist for those who only want kills. A team optimized for slaying can lose Inflation by feeding cash to a marked target or lose Hijack by ignoring the Spike entirely.

Frontline, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, Gunfight, and Gun Game return alongside Team Deathmatch, Search & Destroy, and Free-For-All. Hardcore rules include a limited HUD, friendly fire, and reduced health with no regeneration. Proving Grounds launches as a dedicated training course for the MW4 movement system with movement tutorials and timed courses where players can aim for an S Rating in every course.

Staggered Launch Window Keeps Known Hooks Coming

Call of Duty is staggering the roster release. Shipment arrives on October 27, a few days after launch, in classic form on a Russian harbor, hemmed between water and concrete panel buildings, with MW4’s visual and gameplay improvements. Then Possession and Infected arrive for Halloween in the leadup to Season 1. Possession is a fast party mode moshpit where eliminating an enemy forces you to possess them, transmigrating to their location and stealing their loadout. Infected returns as survivors versus the infected, with one player starting infected and each eliminated survivor joining the swarm. A player who burns through the 12 Core maps in the first weekend gets Shipment as a chaotic return, then two party modes before the first season.

What Is Still Unannounced

Season 1 is the open question. The announcement skips the Season 1 roadmap, any future maps beyond the launch set plus Shipment, and the full contents of the Mobility Course beyond its tutorials and timed S-rated courses. Players still do not know what the first season adds, how its event is structured, or whether Kill Block gains more borrowed sections after launch. Pre-orders are available on Steam, and the Call of Duty Blog will carry the next updates.
