One of the most talked about games from E3 this year was “No Man’s Sky” for the Playstation 4. The gameplay video released at E3 caused quite a buzz across video game media.
“No Man’s Sky” is a science fiction video game by Hello Games. It’s release is reportedly still being determined but the video was enough to make gamers ask for more. The video started with a normal first person shooter in an environment that seemed unfamiliar. It was rich with vibrant colors and alien versions of animals known here on Earth, it even featured alien dinosaurs. The best way to explain it is vibrant like Avatar but more Earth-like.
But just as you think that your mind has been wrapped sufficiently around the game, the character jumps inside a spaceship and travels through the planet’s atmosphere into an on-going space battle. As the ship maneuvers through the battle trying not to get destroyed, it makes its way seamlessly to another planet and another majestic landscape.
What was so moving and impactful about the gameplay was the sheer seamlessness of the action while also showing the vastness of the worlds being built for the game. Just starting with the original planet in the video is enough to satisfy any gamer’s pallet. The animals all feel natural, as if they belong in the world that they live in. But as a whole the world is alien enough to keep you marveled.
Just as you start to get immersed in the alien world and curious as to what else inhabits it, the space battle is shown. A seamless transition from a land battle to a space battle is something that has been tried before but never seemed to be done perfectly. The gameplay video, while still yet to be seen in the final product, offers glimpses at that unreachable perfection. Then, just to show off, it makes another transition to a land portion. The game feels like what the “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron” attempted to do in the last installment.
Not too much is known yet about the plot of “No Man’s Sky.” It is being described as open-world. The universe is also described as uncharted but infested with creatures. The idea of the game seems to be as open as the world it promises. The game could also be brought to other systems besides the Playstation 4.
