Oculus – the company that created the virtual reality headset Oculus Rift – have bought out the designers of the Xbox 360 controller, according to recent reports. Carbon Design have been working with Oculus on several unannounced projects for some time now, so the news of their merger comes as no surprise. The company is expecting to finalise the deal by the end of this summer.
In fact, this isn’t the first change the VR company have made since being purchased by Facebook for $2 billion earlier this year. At the beginning of the month, Naughty Dog co-founder, Jason Rubin, made the move to join Oculus where he will be heading the “first-party content initiative” aspect of the business.
Carbon Design creative director, Peter Bristol, has spoke of their decision to join with Oculus, stating that “[with] consumer VR at its inception, the physical architectures are still unknown. We’re on the cutting edge of defining how virtual reality looks, feels, and functions. We’re incredibly excited to be part of the team and we’re looking forward to helping design the future.”
The Oculus Rift is still in development stages, with a consumer product yet to be announced. However, the development kit 2 is expected to be shipped this August with a retail value of $350.
