For a seventh month in a row, Sony’s Playstation 4 is the best-selling console of the month in the United States for July 2014. This news comes from the monthly NPD report gathering all of the video game sales statistics. Although it isn’t that surprising since Sony just announced that it sold 10 million PS4s to consumers during its Gamescom 2014 press conference, these are really impressing numbers regardless. In addition, the Playstation brand outsold the Xbox brand, once again, if you compare the combined sales of the month for PS3 and PS4 against Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
On the other end of the spectrum, Nintendo had a decent month thanks to Mario Kart 8, which just passed the 1 million sold mark in the US. This is the second Wii U game to do so with New Super Mario Bros. U sitting at 1.69 million sold. Wii U console and games sales have also increased by 60% and 135% compared to July 2014. The 3DS is still doing really well with games like Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land crossing the 3 million sold mark.
Microsoft has yet to comment regarding its NPD number. We’ll keep you updated as they speak up about it.
That’s not all, Sony also dominated software-wise mostly due to the release of the excellent The Last of Us: Remastered, which was the best-selling game of the month as well. We absolutely loved it giving it a 10 out of 10 . The other best-selling games of July include Minecraft, FIFA 14 and Watch Dogs. In fact, here are the top 10 best-selling games of last month (Note: The platforms listed next to each game are in order of best to worst):

5- Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)
6- Call of Duty: Ghosts (Xbox One, Xbox 360, Playstation 4, Playstation 3, Wii U, PC)
7- Grand Theft Auto V (Xbox 360, Playstation 3)
8- Sniper Elite III (Playstation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Playstation 3)
9- NBA 2K14 (Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox One, PC)
10- Lego Marvel Super Heroes (Xbox 360, Playstation 3, 3DS, DS, Playstation 4, Wii U, Xbox One, Playstation Vita, PC)
Finally, it is worth noting that hardware sales doubled in July 2014 compared to July 2013. Plus, if you compare the first 9 months of availability of PS4 and Xbox One against the first 9 months of availability of PS3 and Xbox 360, the next generation systems are outselling their predecessors by 80% combined. This only goes to show that next-gen is alive and well despite what everyone thought initially.
