The sales figures are in for the month of July on Playstation Store. However, the results on the PS4’s side are a bit different than what one would expect, given what was released. According to the Playstation Blog, The Last of Us Remastered was only the second-best seller this previous month. Even more shocking is the game that beat it to the throne, Injustice God’s Among Us: Ultimate addition. Even though the DC fighter was one of the PS4 launch titles, it still out sold the game that people are calling “the best game on the next generation” (“Angry” Joe Vargas).
In truth, there are certain factors that have contributed to this upset. To begin with, the Last of Us: Remastered was only on Playstation Store for the last three days of the month, due to its 7/29 release date. On top of this, during the month of July, Injustice was on-sale to Playstation Plus members for only $8.40. With these factors in-mind, it isn’t such a stretch to see why Naughty Dog’s critically (and publicly) acclaimed masterpiece couldn’t quite clinch the top slot.
Taking a look at the rest of the sales lists, it seems that price cuts make a difference on the Vita as well. Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate and Injustice respectively take first and second, while the previously console & PC exclusive, Child of Light, took 3rd. Interestingly enough, the PS3’s section of the Playstation Store remains dominated by the Minecraft: PS3 edition which has been in the top slot since December when it was first released. The remainder of the PS4’s top 5 include (in descending order) LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, Sniper Elite 3, and Rogue Legacy. In the meantime, Watchdogs, which was the number one of both May and June, has now fallen to number 13 for July. All this being said, it’s most likely that The Last of Us: Remastered will take the crown for August as the positive reviews continue to rain down. However, seeing how sales on the Playstation Store provided such an upset, it could still be any game’s game.
