Today an industry spokesman reported to MCV UK that Sony experienced a PS4 console sales spike of 300% week-on-week in the UK after the release of Destiny. The source of this information is at this time anonymous, being referred to only as “a senior industry source quoting Chart-Track data.” The current sales numbers are unknown, but the same source stated that the week the game released “was the biggest week of the year for PS4 hardware sales.”
With Destiny’s advertising rights being granted exclusively to Sony, the constant barrage of PS4-linked Destiny advertising and the much anticipated Destiny white PS4 bundle are likely the largest factors for the increase in hardware sales linked to the game. However, while PS4 outsold Xbox One consoles 2:1 during this period, Xbox One’s console sales also experienced an increase in sales coinciding with Destiny’s release.
The PS3 console also had a Destiny bundle released, and for the first time in a while managed to beat the sales numbers of Xbox 360 consoles.
Destiny is reported to have been the UKs most successful new IP launch ever, selling over an estimated 5 million units in its first week, raking in approximately $325 million.
