Brandon Sanderson fans have spent years waiting for an official video game adaptation of his Cosmere universe, and while that project remains elusive, a new Early Access title is aiming to scratch that itch. The Severed Gods, a turn-based fantasy RPG from Vietnamese developer Topebox, has launched on Steam, drawing clear inspiration from both Sanderson’s Mistborn series and classic Final Fantasy installments. The news was reported by Screenrant.
The game is now playable in Early Access, offering a substantial slice of content that includes five heroes, three worlds, more than 100 skills, and over 80 relics. Topebox has also unveiled a Year One Roadmap, with development expected to continue for another one to two years. Early player feedback has been extremely positive since its launch earlier this month, with the game highly recommended among those who have tried it.
What Makes The Severed Gods Stand Out
At its core, The Severed Gods is a pixel-style turn-based RPG with open-world exploration, clearly inspired by the early Final Fantasy titles and Octopath Traveler. However, Topebox has introduced several systems designed to keep the combat fresh and original.
The most notable addition is an unusual vertical targeting system. Enemies have low, middle, and high body parts, each with separate defenses. Players can strategically break shields, sever limbs, and permanently disable certain attacks depending on where they strike. This adds a layer of tactical depth that goes beyond traditional turn-based combat.
Heroes also possess distinctive supernatural “Marks,” and abilities can be inherited or reshaped through relics, offering significant build variety. A unique morality-based Karma system further differentiates playthroughs, rewarding Virtue or unlocking forbidden powers through Sin.
The Long Wait for a Sanderson-Style RPG
The comparison to Sanderson’s work is not accidental. The author recently teased a new project being shopped around at AAA studios, though details remain unconfirmed. This follows the unfortunate cancellation of Mistborn: Birthright, a 2012 action RPG that never materialized.
While fans have embraced the official Cosmere tabletop RPG from Brotherwise Games, a proper video game RPG remains among the most requested projects in fantasy. The Severed Gods appears to fill that void for now, offering a narrative and mechanical experience that evokes Sanderson’s signature style of magic systems and moral complexity.
Early Access Content and Roadmap
The current Early Access build provides a robust foundation. With five playable heroes and three distinct worlds, players have plenty to explore. The 100-plus skills and 80-plus relics ensure that no two builds need to feel the same, especially when combined with the Karma system’s branching paths.
Topebox has committed to a Year One Roadmap, outlining a development schedule and content plan for the coming months. The developer expects the Early Access period to last another one to two years, during which the game will likely expand with additional content and refinements based on player feedback.
For fans of Sanderson’s Mistborn or classic turn-based RPGs, The Severed Gods is available to play right now on Steam.
