Stardew Valley Green Rain: What to Do and What to Collect

Make a practical plan for Stardew Valley's green rain, from collecting moss and Fiddlehead Ferns to saving seeds and choosing your first crafts.

Quick Answer

Green rain is a summer gathering opportunity in Stardew Valley, not a reason to spend the day hiding indoors. The event adds unusual vegetation and resources; Demetrius’s later green-rain dialogue describes the phenomenon as apparently harmless.

Your useful targets are moss, Fiddlehead Ferns and Mossy Seeds. Start with a goal: materials for a recipe, a fern for the Community Center, or seeds for trees you want to grow later. You do not need to clear every patch of the valley to make the day worthwhile.

When does green rain happen?

Green rain occurs once each summer, on one of these dates: 5, 6, 7, 14, 15, 16, 18 or 23. The weather report gives an anomalous forecast the day before. This event was added in version 1.6. (Weather reference)

Check the TV before ending each day if you want advance warning. When that forecast appears, put your gathering tools somewhere easy to reach and leave room in your backpack. There is no single summer date that every player should mark as the guaranteed event.

What should you do first during green rain?

Prioritize the resources that solve a current problem on your farm. This order gives an early-game player a manageable plan:

  1. Prepare a light inventory. Take a scythe, an axe and food if you expect to spend the day chopping. Leave tools you will not use at home.
  2. Collect moss along your route. Work through accessible vegetation rather than spending the morning travelling toward a supposedly perfect farming spot.
  3. Find a curled fern tree if you need Fiddlehead Ferns. Put any fern you need for a bundle aside before deciding what to sell.
  4. Keep Mossy Seeds. They give you a way to grow these tree varieties after the weather changes.
  5. Bank materials for one useful craft. A specific target is easier to plan around than trying to collect an arbitrary number of stacks.
  6. Unload before continuing. An empty inventory is more useful than leaving valuable drops behind because you carried unnecessary equipment.

If your axe is being upgraded, focus on moss instead of treating the day as wasted. For later summers, check tool upgrade costs and timing when deciding whether to hand it to Clint before a gathering day.

This is a suggested priority order, not a timed route or a promise of a particular yield. Change the order if a Community Center ingredient matters more to you than crafting materials.

How do you collect moss without cutting down trees?

Strike visible moss with a tool or weapon; you do not need to fell the tree. A scythe is convenient when you also want to clear nearby vegetation. The moss reference also notes a useful precaution: use a scythe or sword on a tapped tree, since an axe can remove its tapper.

Large green-rain weeds are another source. They yield moss and fiber and can drop a Mossy Seed. These event weeds disappear the next day, so clearing them is a sensible use of the temporary opportunity. (Weeds reference)

Do not remove every useful tree just because it has moss on its trunk. Harvesting the moss and keeping the tree lets you preserve a layout you already like, especially around tappers or a planned tree-growing area.

Which green rain trees drop Fiddlehead Ferns?

The tall, curled Type 3 tree is the fern source. The other two green-rain tree varieties are useful for different materials.

Tree variety What to look for and collect
Type 1 and Type 2 Leafy trees; some carry moss. Chopping yields wood and sap, with possible Mossy Seeds
Type 3 A tall, curled fern-like stalk. It does not grow moss; chopping produces Fiddlehead Ferns

A fully grown Type 3 tree gives five Fiddlehead Ferns when felled, plus one from its stump: six total if you remove both. A persistent Type 3 tree can instead be tapped for one fern every two days outside winter. It becomes a stump during winter. (Green Rain Trees reference)

If you are completing the original Community Center bundles, save one Fiddlehead Fern for the Chef’s Bundle. Remixed bundles can differ, so check the bundle displayed in your own save. The Fiddlehead Fern reference lists the original requirement and alternative sources.

That makes a fern tree especially useful when you need the ingredient but have not yet arranged another way to obtain it. Collect the item you need; you do not have to turn the entire day into a tree-clearing project.

What should you craft with your moss?

Choose a recipe you have unlocked, or reserve its ingredients for later. These three options serve different goals:

Craft Recipe unlock Ingredients per craft Result or use
Mushroom Log Foraging level 4 10 hardwood + 10 moss A mushroom-producing log; nearby wild trees affect its output
Deluxe Bait Fishing level 4 5 ordinary bait + 2 moss Produces 5 Deluxe Bait
Deluxe Worm Bin Fishing level 8 1 Worm Bin + 30 moss Produces 4–5 Deluxe Bait daily

For a small mushroom project, three Mushroom Logs require 30 moss and 30 hardwood. If you also want one Deluxe Worm Bin, reserve 60 moss total, the 30 hardwood, and one ordinary Worm Bin. That calculation assumes the required recipes are unlocked; the moss alone does not supply the other ingredients.

A smaller target works too. Setting aside ten moss gets you the moss portion of one Mushroom Log without committing your entire haul.

For fishing, remember that Deluxe Bait requires a rod that accepts bait. The Training Rod and Bamboo Pole cannot use it. If you are still using either, keep materials for later instead of expecting an immediate rod upgrade from the bait itself.

Can you keep green rain trees after the event?

You can grow them from Mossy Seeds, which can come from shaking or chopping the special trees and clearing large weeds. A planted seed can produce any of the three varieties; it is not a guaranteed fern-tree seed. (Mossy Seed reference)

Plant saved seeds where you actually want a long-term tree area. Do not assume that every tree which appeared during the weather will become a permanent part of your route.

Many transformed trees revert afterward, some green-rain trees remain, and those in Pelican Town are removed. (Weather reference) Keeping seeds gives you more control than relying on a particular temporary tree still being there tomorrow.

Why are villagers indoors and the TV showing static?

The event changes the valley’s routine. During the first year, most villagers stay indoors, with Demetrius, Leah and Linus as exceptions. TVs show static and the telephone is unavailable. You also cannot give villagers gifts during Year 1 green rain. (Weather reference)

Use the day for gathering and event dialogue, then return to your usual villager gift plans afterward. Do not carry a bag full of gifts expecting the normal first-year delivery round.

Can a Rain Totem summon green rain?

No. A Rain Totem changes the next day’s weather to ordinary rain under its stated conditions; it is not a selector for the annual green-rain event. Save it for a task that actually needs regular rain.

What if you missed the green rain day?

You still have ways to collect the important materials. Moss can grow on trees outside the event, and Fiddlehead Ferns can be foraged in the Secret Woods during summer or in Ginger Island’s jungle throughout the year. (Fiddlehead Fern reference)

Choose the alternative that your save can access now. Missing this summer’s event costs a concentrated gathering opportunity; it does not mean you must abandon a recipe or Community Center plan until next year.
