Paradox Interactive has released Stellaris 4.5 Cygnus as a free Custodian update, and it is the largest bugfix patch in Stellaris history with more than 350 bug fixes alongside stability improvements, desync fixes, AI improvements, and player-requested changes. The launch follows a busy stretch for the publisher, which recently saw a LEGO Cities: Skylines spinoff surface through a ratings board, and continues Paradox’s long-running support for its grand strategy catalog, from Hearts of Iron IV to its space-faring flagship.
Community-driven fixes and Open Beta
According to the Steam announcement, the patch contains 525 lines of changes, and 46.7 percent of them came directly from issues flagged by the player community through bug reports, forum threads, Reddit posts, and Discord discussions. Many of those reports arrived during an Open Beta that opened the first week of July and went through nine updates before release.
Custodian updates are free to everyone who owns Stellaris. Paradox warns that Cygnus breaks save compatibility because the Pop Group rework changes how Pops are stored, so saves from version 4.4 and earlier will not load correctly in 4.5. Players are advised to finish or back up campaigns first and to use the Stellaris 4.4 Rollback beta on Steam if needed.
Pop Groups, Factions, and Nomads content
Pop Groups are no longer split by Factions and Ethics. Each Pop Group now tracks what percentage of its Pops holds which Ethics and belongs to which Faction, which produces far fewer Pop Groups in the late game and less clutter in planetary management. The Factions screen now shows how attractive each Faction is, and Suppressing or Embracing a Faction is better reflected in its growth rate.
The update also unlocks Nomads content: the Cosmogenesis Ambition, the Knights of the Toxic God Origin, and the Storm Chasers Origin. Each requires its respective DLC from The Machine Age, Toxoids Species Pack, and Cosmic Storms.
AI, Federations, macOS, and customization
New Government policies let players weight what the Ship Autodesigner reaches for, and Starbases get the same treatment with reworked defense modules. Nomad AI behavior was improved with better Economic Plans and smarter system selection logic. Federations can now enact Economic Laws granting members free Research Agreements and Commercial or Wayline Pacts.
macOS builds now ship as a universal arm64 plus x86_64 binary and run natively on Apple Silicon, no longer requiring Rosetta 2 translation, with a significant performance improvement. Players can also choose map border, map fill, and ship colors independently of their primary and secondary Empire colors. Game Director Stephen Muray ran through the changes in the announcement.
