The most anticipated FPS games of 2014

Could we not have mentioned Titanfall? It’s pretty clear that it’s anticipated, given the fact that for the last month or so, it’s been the main focus of both the gaming community and the press. Sure, there are those that are skeptical, there are those that love it unconditionally, and those that call it a Call of Duty clone. Regardless, there’s no doubt Titanfall’s success is pretty much guaranteed now, at least financially. And most beta impressions have been positive enough to back this claim. If throwing realism aside is not a huge problem for you, you’ll have plenty of fun blasting away Mechs and Pilots in Respawn’s Titanfall. It’s coming on the 11th of March for the Xbox One and PC, and two weeks later on the Xbox 360, so the wait isn’t exactly long either.

Pretty much the only title on the list not guaranteed to come out in 2014 (although it’s very likely), Halo 5 is definitely a game to be hyped about. Of course, it might not even be named Halo 5. 343  Industries, the devs behind the previous Halo 4, have yet to announce the game’s official name. However, it’s in development, that’s a given. It’s definitely being developed for the Xbox One, but it’s yet unclear if it will come to the PC or the Xbox 360 as well. Logic says it should, given that it’s still a Microsoft-backed project. Halo 5 was announced at 2013’s E3, and at the time, 343 Industries emphasized a 2014 release. If that will be the case or not remains to be seen. Halo is still a fascinating franchise, and we’re itching to get our hands on it!

After the colossal flop of Alien: Colonial Marines early in 2013, we’d normally be skeptical about getting hyped for yet another Alien title. We’re still not sure how Gearbox have managed to screw up so badly, but alas, that was the case. Our reasons for highly anticipating Alien: Isolation are well grounded though. First, it’s a completely different genre – it’s not a game about blasting away millions of foes, it’s one about survival, atmosphere and story. It’s horror at its best, as it should be the case with an Alien title. Alien: Isolation pays homage to the Ridley Scott-directed original, and centers on the story of Amanda Ripley, Ellen Ripley’s daughter, who similarly to her mother, is stranded in space with one mean Xenomorph on the loose. The visuals are the game are stunning, especially in the sense that they recreate the eerie setting of the 79 film. It’s coming late this year (Q4) for all major platforms, including the PC and next-gen consoles.

Brothers-in-Arms-Furious-4-9

Previously known as Brothers in Arms: Furious 4, this FPS is another take on Nazi-killing. It’s also developed by Gearbox, which makes us both hyped (hoping it will be as good as Borderlands 2) and scared (hoping it will be nothing like Alien: Colonial Marines) at the same time. The appeal of the idea of four hardened champions of democracy (hardly) ripping through hordes of Nazis in a Inglorious Basterds style can hardly be resisted nevertheless. The game looks brutal, hilarious and fun at the same time. It’s not exactly clear when Furious 4 will be coming out (very late 2014 or early 2015 most likely) yet, but we do know it’s being developed for the PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, so not upgrading to next-gen doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be out of things to play or Nazis to cut in half with a chainsaw.

homefront

Last, but definitely not least, we have Crytek’s Homefront 2. The sequel to the popular Homefront is pretty much shrouded in mystery. We know that THQ was initially planning to publish the game, but as the company went bankrupt, the Homefront license was acquired by developer Crytek, who will be publishing the game. It’s in deep development though, and will come out late this year, or early next year. Homefront 2 will have both singleplayer and multiplayer features, and is being built on an advanced version of the CryEngine. What platforms will be getting it is unknown, but given the fact that the game was announced in 2011 and has most likely been scratched and production has been rebooted, it’s safe to assume it will be coming to next-gen consoles as well. We’ll certainly know a lot more after this year’s E3, and we’ll be anxiously waiting for its release.
