Speaking during Ubisoft’s Q1 investors call tonight, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot acknowledged defined anticipation regarding rumours of the newest instalment to one of their biggest selling franchises, codename Assassin’s Creed Comet, stating that the release of information may be just around the corner.
The title is speculated to be last gen exclusive, launching only on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. The game is supposedly planned as a response to the upcoming launch of Assassin’s Creed Unity, the series’ first next-gen only title. The revelation came following a question regarding Ubisoft’s plans to keep the franchise on “current-gen systems”, reportedly stated as such to exclude the notion of PS4 or XB1 – Guillemot responded by stating
“We said that we were going to give more info soon on that, and it will come soon.”
The industry giant’s CEO refused to be drawn into any further discussion about the game, keeping details deliberately vague. Rumours of the second Assassin’s Creed title scheduled for 2014 have been rife over the last month, and this tactical move appears to be intended to keep last-gen gamers invested in the franchise. While many believe support for the PS3 and 360 ought to be dropped over the next year, it would seem Ubisoft intend to continue to cater to those that haven’t yet found themselves moving on.
Following Ubisoft’s recent run in with the vox community, Comet maybe be the developer’s saving grace. Confirming the second title puts the company at a unique vantage point over prior market feedback, allowing the rare ability to tailor the game as precisely as possible. It was clear that accusations of misogyny and exclusivity rocked the company that claims to value diversity so deeply – responses were noticeably rash and ill-considered, and so this possible second chance may well be just what the doctor ordered to mend their bruised community relationship. Despite this, anticipation for the upcoming instalment of Unity has been plentiful and Comet seems to be following suit.
