Everyone knows that Nintendo has been lacking in this generation in comparison to its fellow console counterparts. The Wii U has been criticized for its lack of power and capabilities, to its ever slimming collection of games. Here I will list some of the highly anticipated games for the Wii U and try to inspire Wii U owners to fear not, their console is far from dead.
1. Super Smash Bros Wii U (release date, holiday 2014)
Why be excited?
Because if history has taught us anything, it’s that every Smash Bros has been awesome for its time. Starting back with the Nintendo 64 Super Smash Bros, it was a game where you and your friends could select some of your favorite characters and put them against one another. It was new, it was exciting, it featured great levels, and overall it was fun. Even now going back with 3 friends to play this game you can have a blast. Then came Melee, this game offered many more characters, significantly better graphics, more levels, and an even larger competitive fan base. Many still view Melee as the best Super Smash Bros to date for its speed and intensity. Super Smash Bros Brawl was released in 2008, bringing even more characters than the two previous games, more levels, and the ability to design your own levels. This game also featured a Subspace Emissary mode which featured cooperative play.
Super Smash Brothers for the Wii U is looking promising, and we have zero reason to doubt its greatness.
2. Mario Maker (TBA 2015)
The Mario fan base has been asking to be able to create their own games for years. Well, to be more accurate, people have been making Mario games for years but now they will be able to do it legally! This game allows players to create their own levels then play in them, what more could a Mario fan want? This game has huge potential in relation to online features which could potentially include: uploading and downloading levels, and comparing high scores and times.
3. Splatoon (TBA 2015)
This is a game that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The idea of this game is to cover as much of the level in paint as possible. It’s a lighthearted shooter game, which allows the gamepad to be used as a map in order to compare your teams paint coverage to the opposing teams. In this game in order to travel swiftly across the map one can turn into a squid and swim through their paint, in this form they are invisible to the opposing team. There is a variety of strategies one can use in this game and many intriguing features.
4. The Legend of Zelda (TBA 2015)
An open world Zelda…need I say more?
5. Pokemon Wii U (TBA)
Last year Pokemon trademarked the title “Pokken Fighters”, this has been rumored to be a Pokemon fighting game for the Wii U. To add onto these rumors, last year during the Pokemon Game Show in Japan the following clip was released (skip to 2:40).

As a Pokemon fan myself I find this extremely exciting. I think that they have waited to release much more information on this game because they want to incorporate amiibo into it. It would easily help sell the item if somehow Super Smash Brothers wasn’t able to do the trick. Their is very little we can tell from the very short clip shown of the game, however it helps give Wii U fans hope for a decent Pokemon game on the system.
The great thing about Nintendo is how they keep bringing back the couch multiplayer experiences, their is nothing quite as pleasing as a good couch multiplayer game.
