Stardew Valley Sturgeon: How to Catch One and Make Caviar

Catch your first Sturgeon with the right season, location, and equipment, then choose between a bundle donation and a Fish Pond for future Caviar production.

Quick Answer

Catch Sturgeon in Stardew Valley at the Mountain Lake during Summer or Winter, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Rain is optional. The Training Rod cannot catch this fish. The Sturgeon reference lists the normal fishing conditions.

After the catch, pause before selling it. A Sturgeon can fill a Community Center bundle slot or start a Fish Pond that supplies roe for Caviar. Those are different goals, and your best first use depends on which one you want to finish next.

This guide covers unmodded Stardew Valley 1.6 mechanics. Equipment suggestions make the task easier; expensive gear remains optional.

Where and when can you catch Sturgeon?

Use the Mountain Lake near the Mines and Robin’s shop, not the town river or ocean. Summer and Winter are the normal seasons; arrive with enough daylight to fish before the evening cutoff.

Check before casting Required normal conditions
Location Mountain Lake
Season Summer or Winter
Time 6 a.m.–7 p.m.
Weather Any; rain is optional
Rod Not the Training Rod

The lake sits in the Mountain area. Cast into open water away from the nearest shore. A long cast helps when its landing point reaches water farther from land.

Rainy Summer days improve the opportunity. Clear days also work, and the fish may take several casts.

What rod and tackle should you use?

Use a regular fishing rod you can handle. The important exception is the Training Rod, which only catches fish below difficulty 50; Sturgeon is difficulty 78. Practicing with that rod can help build skill, but you must switch away from it for this catch.

If you can afford it and have reached Fishing level 6, Willy sells the Iridium Rod for 7,500g. Its tackle slot can make the minigame easier; any eligible rod can hook Sturgeon.

Temporary Fishing buffs do not unlock shop inventory. The official 1.6.9 changelog records a fix for skill buffs affecting shop requirements.

A Trap Bobber slows lost progress when the fish leaves your green bar. At Fishing level 6, buy one for 500g or craft it from one Copper Bar and 10 Sap. Buying the rod and one bobber costs 8,000g, before bait or food.

That 8,000g is an optional convenience budget. Try your eligible rod first; buy the upgrade only if repeated escapes are the problem.

How do you make the catch easier?

Improve the green bar’s size and your margin for mistakes. Higher Fishing skill increases the bar; Fishing food can raise the effective level temporarily. Dish O’ The Sea, for example, provides +3 Fishing.

Use this order:

  1. Check season, time, water and rod before spending consumables.
  2. Equip suitable tackle if your rod supports it.
  3. Eat your Fishing-buff food shortly before the session, preserving its duration for fishing.
  4. During the minigame, focus on keeping the fish inside the green bar. Skip treasure when your priority is landing this fish.
  5. If attempts remain frustrating, practice on easier catches and return with more Fishing skill.

The fishing mechanics reference explains bar size and distance from land. It also flags a mobile distance-calculation issue, so the same casting position may produce different results on mobile. Expect the number of attempts to vary.

Can you get Sturgeon outside Summer and Winter?

Yes: Magic Bait bypasses ordinary season, time and weather restrictions. Location still applies, and the rod must accept bait. Use Magic Bait at the Mountain Lake.

It is a later-progression option sold through Qi’s Walnut Room. If you already have access, it can save waiting for the season; otherwise, work toward the next normal fishing window.

You can also buy a Sturgeon when it appears in a shop. Krobus’s Wednesday stock can include one for 200g. The Traveling Cart is another random-stock option, with Sturgeon priced at 600–1,000g. Check each shop when available and treat either purchase as a lucky shortcut.

Should your first Sturgeon go to the bundle or a pond?

Donate it if that is the immediate Community Center goal you want to complete. The standard Lake Fish Bundle requires a Sturgeon. Check your actual bundle screen if you selected remixed bundles.

If your priority is a repeatable supply, keep it for a Fish Pond instead. Here is a practical decision rule:

  • Bundle progress matters most today: donate the fish and plan a separate pond catch.
  • You struggled to land one and want more later: keep it, build the pond, and expand its population before taking fish back out.
  • You lack pond materials and the donation can wait: store the fish while deciding.

Avoid turning the first catch into an ordinary gift just because it is available. Our Stardew Valley gifts guide offers other options for friendship goals, leaving this fish available for progression.

What does a Sturgeon Fish Pond cost?

Robin’s Fish Pond costs 5,000g, 200 Stone, five Seaweed and five Green Algae. It occupies a 5-by-5 area and normally takes two days to build. The building requirements cover construction; roe production begins after you stock the completed pond.

The pond also needs its fish. If the purchase competes with a mining or farming upgrade, compare it with your next Stardew Valley tool upgrade before committing the gold.

A Sturgeon pond starts with capacity for one fish. Fulfill the displayed requests to expand it:

Capacity change Request
1 → 3 1 Diamond
3 → 5 1 Jelly, 2 Maple Syrup, or 1 Pickles
5 → 7 3 Omni Geodes
7 → 10 1 Nautilus Shell

For the row with alternatives, supply the item displayed by the pond. The final request uses a Nautilus Shell; a Nautilus Fossil will not satisfy it.

Capacity and population advance separately. Completing a request adds space, while new Sturgeon arrive on their normal four-day cycle; quests interrupt that progression. Read the current request before assuming growth is broken.

How do you turn Sturgeon into Caviar?

Load Sturgeon Roe into a Preserves Jar. Caviar takes 6,000 processing minutes, usually described as about four in-game days. The timer begins when the roe enters the jar.

The Preserves Jar recipe unlocks at Farming level 4 and uses 50 Wood, 40 Stone and eight Coal. If you build both a pond and one jar from scratch, reserve:

  • 5,000g;
  • 240 Stone, combining 200 for the pond and 40 for the jar;
  • 50 Wood and eight Coal;
  • five Seaweed and five Green Algae;
  • a Sturgeon, with expansion-request items budgeted separately.

Caviar sells for 500g, or 700g with Artisan. It is also an option for the Missing Bundle. The sale price applies to each finished Caviar; daily income varies because pond output is random and jars need processing time.

If your jar produces Aged Roe, check the input. Other fish roe creates Aged Roe, while Sturgeon Roe creates Caviar.
