Comparing iOS to Android flagships

by GH Staff

Ever since the first Samsung Galaxy came out, there has been a debate between smartphone users. Some say Apple, others say Samsung. Some prefer iOS 8, while others swear by Android. There are many things that differentiate these brands form one another. These differences are often their strengths which these companies rely on in order to convert as many mobile users as possible to their side of the barricade. Here is a short comparison between the new iPhones and Samsung’s S5 and Note 4.

Design

The only difference between the new iPhones is their size. Everything else looks pretty much the same. They both have a slim build, an anodized aluminum body with shatter proof glass on their front panels (it is also covered in oleophobic coating). Meanwhile, Galaxy S5 is quite different from Note 4. The S5 uses a polycarbonate shell together with perforated dots, while the Note 4 has faux leather on the back. It was decided by both the critics and the fans that the new iPhones look slightly better.

Display

The new Samsung smartphones are using Super AMOLED displays while the iPhones possess LED-backlit LCD IPS displays. In case of Apple’s products, these are 5.5 inches with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels, 401 ppi. Samsung’s Note 4 has a slightly larger, 5.7 inches display that is also of higher resolution (1440 x 2560 pixels, 515 ppi). While Apple has promised a better experience in terms of viewing with the smaller iPhone 6, its 4.7 inches display can’t possibly support larger than 750 x 1334 pixels video or picture with a similar pixel density that you may be used to with their older models (which is 326 ppi). Galaxy S5, on the other hand, has a full HD, 5.1 inches display with an impressive 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution and 432 ppi. So we can clearly see who the winner is in that category.

Hardware

Both new iPhone 6 phones contain a A8, dual core processor which is clocked at 1.4 GHz, together with a PowerVR GX6450 GPU. Samsung devices contain different quad core processors: the S5 model has a Krait 400 with a Snapdragon 801 chipset while the Note 4 includes a more powerful, 2.7 GHz Krait 450 processor (also with a Snapdargon chipset, but this one is a 805 model). It is tricky to compare these four, due to the fact that Apple’s chips are 64 bit while the Samsung ones are 32 bit. The new iPhones both have a 1GB worth of RAM to them and can be further equipped with 16, 64 or 128 GB internal memory. They do not support a microSD card. The Samsung’s some in a 16 or 32 GB (in case of S5) and 32GB (Note 4) package and they can also be expanded up to 128GB.

Operating Systems

Of course, both of the Samsung new products come with an Android OS. However, S5 comes with a 4.4.2 (KitKat) but the Note comes with a slightly newer version of 4.4.4 (KitKat). The iOS devices operate on the new 8.0.2 version, which is said to offer a better overall user experience due to some of its unique features.
