Patrick Geuder revealed in a tweet that as of June 25, the PC/Mac version of Minecraft has been outsold by its Xbox 360 and PS3 counterparts, and that the popular game has sold over 54 million units across all platforms. This figure shows a stunning adoption rate, as it was only in February that the game had only sold 34 million units in total.
This news comes as Mojang prepares to release the hit game on Xbox One, PS4, and PS Vita, which it will do in August. Players will be able to export their saved worlds from Xbox 360 and PS3 to their next gen counterparts. The next gen versions will be priced at $19.99 for those new to the Minecraft experience, while existing users will be able to upgrade to the next gen version for $4.99. Unfortunately, users will not be able to transfer their saves back to the current gen consoles once upgraded.
This new figure makes Minecraft the 3rd best selling video game of all time, beating out Super Mario Brothers for the honor. The Nintendo classic, which was released in 1985, has sold 40.24 million copies over its existence. Only Tetris (143 million) and Wii Sports (81.99 million) have sold more copies than Notch’s masterpiece.
