Square Enix is preparing to significantly expand the free trial for Final Fantasy 11, the long-running MMO that predates the massively popular Final Fantasy 14. According to a recent developer livestream, Director Yoji Fujito confirmed plans to raise the level cap and remove the time limit “as early as September,” making the classic game more accessible to new and returning players. However, even with these changes, the trial will remain far more limited than its successor’s offering.
The most notable change is the removal of the existing 14-day playtime limit on the demo version, which has long been a barrier for players wanting to explore Vana’diel without committing to a subscription. Alongside this, the level cap will be raised from 50 to 75, giving free players a more substantial taste of the game’s content. These adjustments are planned for September, though they may not arrive simultaneously due to technical considerations.
What’s Changing in the FF11 Free Trial
Fujito outlined the key updates during the latest FF11 developer livestream, as reported by PCGamesN. The level cap increase to 75 is slated to be implemented with the game’s regular September update. However, the removal of the 14-day restriction will require separate maintenance on the subscription-handling server, which Fujito noted “is in a completely different place from the game.” He intends to perform “a little maintenance around the end of September” to lift the time limit for all players.
Despite these improvements, several restrictions will remain in place. Free trial players will only be able to explore areas from the base game, with no access to expansions. They can hold a maximum of 100,000 Gil, and cannot trade, use the bazaar, or access the auction house. Additionally, world transfers, tells, shouts, and yells are disabled, and players cannot become mentors even if they reach the 180-hour playtime threshold.
Fujito explained the rationale behind the changes, noting that the old level-50 cap was “just a little bit too weak,” while the 14-day limit meant “it feels like there’s just not quite enough time in a single day.” He hopes that lifting both elements “should make it more accessible for people to play – or if they want to come back, they can always do so.”
Context: FF11’s Place in the MMO Landscape
The expansion of FF11’s free trial comes amid renewed interest in the game, partly fueled by Final Fantasy 14‘s Echoes of Vana’diel alliance raid crossover, which showcased locations and characters from FF11. Square Enix also hosted its yearly ‘Return Home to Vana’diel’ campaign from August 7 to August 17, allowing returning subscribers to play for free.
However, even with these upgrades, FF11’s trial remains far less generous than FF14’s. Currently, FF14’s free trial includes the base game and three full expansions, a much more substantial proposition. Fujito first revealed plans to expand the FF11 free trial back in May, and these September changes are a step in the right direction, though they still leave FF11’s trial behind its successor.
What It Means for Players
For those curious about FF11 but hesitant to subscribe, the removal of the 14-day limit and the higher level cap will provide a more forgiving entry point. The changes are likely to be implemented separately, with the level cap arriving first in the September update and the time limit removal following at the end of the month. While the trial still restricts players to base-game areas and lacks social features, it offers a more substantial taste of the classic MMO experience.
If these changes prove popular, there may be room for early expansions like Rise of the Zilart and Chains of Promathia to gradually be added to the free offering in the future, though this remains speculative. For now, players can look forward to a more accessible FF11 in September, even if it still falls short of FF14’s generous trial.
