Attack on Titan is a popular anime series from Japan, following the lives or soldiers as they fight against the Titans, which terrorize and destroy their way of life. And what happens to every popular anime? An attempt at a video game.
Spike Chunsoft, the creators of the DanganRonpa series and Virtue’s Last Reward, stepped forward to create a game based on the popular franchise and did the fans very proud, giving us Attack on Titan: The Last Wings of Mankind, an action game for the 3DS, which featured a Free Mode and a Story mode, including scenes from the anime and intense combat, having to avoid getting yourself eaten by a Titan. I’ve not tried the game myself, as I can’t import, but reviewers who have played the game gave it much praise, saying that the game stayed very true to the franchise.
After it’s success, Spike Chunsoft are pushing for the series to have an English release, to please the Western fanbase.
An unnamed worker for Spike Chunsoft rumored that the company was currently looking for a publisher willing to help them get the game to Western companies. News of this excited the fanbase on the internet, who now sit with their tails wagging for a set release date, but, so far, have heard nothing from the company. It’s no surprise that ANYONE is excited. The game does look very impressive, gameplay trailers showing off the mechanics of the 3D maneuver gear from the series, flying over buildings and through trees. They also show us how to take out a Titan while they are still moving to attack you, which does sound like it’d get your heart racing. The mechanics of the game will hopefully simulate you to feel like it’s actually a life or death situation, like in the anime, itself.
The game was originally released in Japan in December 2013, so having to wait half a year before any word comes up for an English release must have the fans of the series excited for the final release. But many questions are still being left unanswered. DLC have been released in Japan for the characters Levi and Sasha Blouse. No confirmation has been given to if they’d release the DLC with the game or just try and get the game out, leaving players with the three main characters; Eren Jaeger, Mikasa Ackerman and Armin Arlert, as well as the edit characters in Free mode.
No matter how many questions are left hanging, I, myself, am excited to see this game come to the West and I hope Spike Chunsoft find a good publisher, like they did with their other 3DS titles, like Virtue’s Last Reward.
