GSC Game World has released Update 2.1 for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, the first major patch following the Archmajor 2.0 update. Titled The Zone Lookout, the update is live now, according to GSC Game World’s announcement on Steam. The patch adds a configurable A-Life NPC visualisation distance, updated binocular support for longer streaming ranges, a fast travel system with squad leaders, anomaly improvements, and a long list of AI, combat, quest, and platform fixes.
The game’s survival horror depends on Zone unpredictability. Update 2.1 targets the simulation layer directly. A-Life is the game’s persistent AI system for NPC and mutant activity outside the player’s immediate view, and GSC now lets players increase how far that system is visualised. The simulation has defined the series since the first games, where NPCs and mutants keep to their own routines whether or not the player is nearby.
The setting is new, and GSC does not prescribe a single recommended value. Players can dial it up or down based on their hardware and how much of the Zone they want to see at once.
A-Life visualisation distance setting
The A-Life visualisation distance affects several systems. GSC tied binocular identification, gunfight audio range, and anomaly render distance to that setting. Binocular functionality was updated to support the new A-Life visualisation distance, and binocular identification range increases when that setting is raised. Gunfight audio range now extends based on the streaming distance setting, so distant firefights become audible sooner.
A larger A-Life visualisation distance means distant NPCs, mutants, and firefights are processed and visible or audible earlier, which makes the Zone feel more inhabited. It also costs more performance. Because the setting is optional, players can pick the balance that works on their hardware. GSC’s Steam post does not list a specific maximum draw distance in meters.
On the increased setting, players hear combat farther out and can identify NPCs at longer range with binoculars. That makes recon and approach planning more viable, but it also means more of the Zone is running at once.
The same patch addresses the simulation’s quirks. GSC fixed A-Life NPCs and mutants stuck mid-air and fixed A-Life NPCs that did not stop movement during a dialogue. With the expanded distance, more simulated activity enters view, so stuck actors are more obvious.
Squad-leader fast travel and anomaly rework
The second major addition is a fast travel system with squad leaders. Across a large open-world survival map, those NPCs are now fast-travel points, so players do not have to walk every route by foot. GSC does not specify travel costs, cooldowns, or range limits in the announcement.
Anomaly systems received a broad pass in the same update. GSC added new systems for how anomalies handle streaming distance and interactions with dead bodies. The CNPP arch-anomaly received visual improvements. The Flare light anomaly got new visual effects, and anomaly render distance now scales with the streaming distance setting.
AI, combat, and PS5 mission fixes
Update 2.1 includes a long AI and combat remediation list. The patch fixes massive NPC and mutant spawns at Rostok and excessive mercenary NPC spawns at Duga. It resolves a visual bug where an NPC weapon levitated behind their back and corrects armed NPCs aiming in unintended directions. NPC movement bugs also received attention: actors stuck while looting a corpse, stuck inside campfires, and stuck mid-air should now behave properly.
Combat behavior changed as well. GSC adjusted NPC reactions to the player’s melee attack, fixed NPCs that would not attack when the player was not directly looking at them, and fixed the Amok Run attack failing to trigger when initiated out of line of sight. The internal height of some cover pieces was increased, which improves AI behavior with small covers.
The patch also fixes several PS5 progress blockers. Several named NPCs could be missing on PlayStation and block mission progress. GSC lists fixes for Varan in Deal With The Devil, Squint in A Needle In A Haystack, Scar and his squad in The Assault On The Duga, Sava in Hot On The Trail, Shcherba in In Search Of Past Glory, and others.
On the visual side, the patch fixes the scope mark on the Margach D-12MT when using FSR FrameGen and addresses several blurry scope textures when aiming down sights.
Quest, platform, and mod warning
Main and side quests also received targeted fixes. GSC improved level art and level design at the X-16 lab, the Generators region, Cooling Tower region, CNPP region, and Malachite region, plus several mission locations. The Chemical Plant gates access logic changed after the Signal. The update also fixes several missions that could not be started: The destructive power of the mind, The road to the center of the storm, Shadows of the past, To the origins of Freedom, Territorial war, Distant Mirage, and In the heart of the Iron Forest.
GSC fixed an issue where starting missions of DLC could not be started, fixed DLC and add-ons not applied during first launch on SteamOS, and resolved GeForce NOW users unable to launch DLC. The patch also fixes a memory leak caused by many map markers, which could make the map unresponsive, and cleans up typos in Ukrainian localization.
Graphical and video setting descriptions were adjusted, and some texts during the new campaign start received localization fixes. GSC says the update was planned around player feedback from social media, forums, and reviews, pairing the new content with a broad set of bug fixes. GSC also warns that mods may not withstand the latest shifts after this update. The studio recommends disabling mods if players hit performance or stability issues, and points to support.stalker2.com for help.
