The father of survival horror, Shinji Mikami, is back to direct The Evil Within. Better known as the creator of Resident Evil, Mikami and developers Tango Gameworks promise a new look and feel of a survival horror game.

The game centers around the main character, Detective Sebastian Castellanos, whom is investigating a scene of an appalling mass murder when he, and his partners, encounter a daunting and powerful force. After being a witness of a cruel slaughter of his fellow partners, Sebastian is then attacked and knocked unconscious. When he wakes up, he faces a gruel world where grisly creatures roam with the dead. He embarks on an epic and daunting journey to find out who is behind the evil and unimaginable dark force.

The Evil Within is primarily a third person shooter with enemies being taken out with either devastating headshots or disastrous shots to the legs. Or, if you are limited on the scarce supply of bullets, you can always burn a foe. However, the game is said to be rather dynamic. Pete Hines of Bethesda Softworks even goes on to say,  “… if you die and replay the scenario they’re not gonna do the exact same thing. If you shoot them in the head, sometimes they are actually dead and sometimes they are not. The fact that you don’t actually know and you can’ really predict if the bullet will actually take them down or not just adds more of that uncertainty to the game. It never lets you feel comfortable and in control of what’s going, which is part of creating the environment and tension for a great survival horror game.”

The video game is packed with different scenarios once the character responds. For example, if an enemy is behind a door you opened before you died there will be a chance they might not be there again, and it creates the tense atmosphere so many horror games are known for. The player can also go through the game in different ways. They can play as stealthy and sneak around enemies undetected, fight an enemy, or even hide. The player will never know whether playing a certain way is right or wrong. The Evil Within allows the player to put their own style into the game. Pete Hine said there will be several times where some situations are obvious as to how to play, where the player must run from enemies that are impossible to harm/kill or where they must duke it out in order to survive. More or less the game allows the player the flexibility to decide how the game will be played.

With the horror/survival game taking a different twist concerning numerous ways to play the game, developers are sure many horror game fans will be excited. The Evil Within will be available on the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, and PC. It will be developed by Bethesda Softworks, and the release date for the game is set to be October 21st, 2014, just in time for Halloween.
