In a clever bit of marketing Sony Europe announced today that they’ll be releasing the upcoming remastered version of The Last of Us in a bundle with the PlayStation 4 console. The game which was critically received as a late release for the PlayStation 3 was always due for a PlayStation 4 remastering, and while you can buy the title itself this July, for those who don’t yet have a PlayStation 4 this is a perfect incentive to grab the console. Using one of their most impressive games to try and edge ahead in the console war is an inspired idea and to sweeten the deal PlayStation have been careful to keep the price down. The Last of Us bundle will retail at just thirty euro more than the console does usually.
Considering how popular The Last of Us was on its initial release it’s not hard to see why it was selected for the job. As of March this year the title had sold over 6 million units and no doubt this remastered addition will contribute a lot more to that tally. The game, developed by Naughty Dog, was praised for its in depth story, characterisation and gameplay. The remastered edition is going to include updates to visuals, directors commentary and the previously released DLC including the main story follow up, Left Behind.
The game set in a post-apocalyptic near future follows the fight for survival of main characters Joel and the teenager in his charge, Ellie. Though director Neil Druckman has hinted that thought is going into a The Last of Us sequel, with no concrete news on the much anticipated The Last of Us 2 this may be the only chance to get a fresh fix of Naughty Dog’s gritty, zombie infested USA for some time. The bundle will be available all over Europe on the 30th of July and while no USA date has been released for the bundle the remastered edition of The Last of Us will be available on the 29th.
