Xbox Wire has published a roundup of five features in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ mode, citing official Call of Duty Blog intel drops. DMZ is set on the new Haijin map and inspired by events and locations from the Modern Warfare 4 Campaign. A prior GamerHeadlines deep dive covered the Haijin map’s threats and Forward Operating Base stations. It is an open-world combat environment where players loot, complete objectives, fight enemies and rival Operators, and extract before everything they have earned is lost. Activision previously detailed the mode in an official DMZ announcement.
Players who digitally pre-order or pre-purchase Modern Warfare 4 can gain Early Access to the Campaign starting Friday, October 16, and to all of DMZ starting Tuesday, October 20. The events in DMZ are set after the main MW4 Campaign, according to Xbox Wire.
Feature breakdown
The 3D Printer is available at the Forward Operating Base between deployments and is the primary crafting station for equipment and loadout upgrades before dropping into Haijin. Players unlock new crafting recipes as they progress. Four basic Resources found during a deployment are Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals, and Metals, automatically broken down from looted items into the Backpack and Stash. 3D Printer Ingredients are rarer materials found in specific areas of Haijin, examples being Binding Catalyst, Biomaterials, Detonators, and Control Units.
DMZ offers three ways to deploy: Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, and Free Roam. Story Missions are narrative-led deployments that can be completed and replayed, with some locked until prerequisites are met. Dynamic Operations give squads multiple goals; completing an operation earns DMZ XP, Cash, and the ability to call in a Supply Drop.
Operator customization and progression
Players begin with two Operator slots and unlock a third as they progress. Each Operator grows stronger by surviving deployments and earning DMZ XP. Successful extractions level up an Operator’s Dog Tags, granting Trait Points to invest across Warfighter, Scout, and Survivalist Trait Trees. If an Operator fails to extract and becomes MIA, the player must either recover them with DMZ Cash or dismiss them; recovery costs rise with Trait investment.
Loot and extraction
Loot matters beyond the current deployment; everything acquired, including the contents of the Bank and Stash, is shared across all Active Duty Operators. Gear that is not extracted is lost, which keeps every haul riding on a successful exfil.
